FAMILY GAME NIGHT
Something that has worked for my family for awhile now is our weekly Family Game Nights. Since school has started, we haven’t been able to hold them every week due to different schedules, but when we do get a chance to have a Family Game Night, the boys love it. There is no television on to distract us, and we usually have an early dinner that night so we can have at least an hour of uninterrupted family time.
I don’t know how other family’s do it, but we kind of have our Family Game Nights down to a science. Each week is a different family members week. Which means that that person gets to choose the game for that night as well as the refreshments. For me, my favorite game is Monopoly and I always like to have an ice cream bar when it’s my night. My boys usually choose between Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders and it is always popcorn and koolaide when it’s their turn to choose. And my fiance likes Sorry or Monopoly. (Even though we have more games then these, it seems like we always stick to the tried and true.)
The best part about this is that our family gets to spend time together without any other distractions. The TV is turned off, and so is the ringer on the phone. We get to talk about our week, and we get the chance to spend some quality time together. Besides the cost of the snacks, everything else fits into our budget. I like to think that I am creating lasting memories in my children’s mind and that hopefully they will take our family traditions and one day pass it on to their own children.

This is a picture of me LOOSING Monopoly one night.

I love family game night, too. As my boys have gotten older we seem to be getting too busy to do it every week like we used to, but we still try to do it as often as we can. I like the idea of letting them choose snacks, too, we’ll have to do that next time. Thanks!
Our family LOVES family game night. We have 3 versions of Monopoly that we play: the original, BUGopoloy, and Diggin’ Dino’s Jr. Monopoly. I love that we are having fun, but that the kids are also exercising important math skills (I just don’t remind them that they’re learning while playing!).
Thanks for stopping by our blog and taking the time to comment.
Your comment also made me really think about doing more of the letter illustrations. But I still can’t see doing any beyond the letters/numbers that kids naturally switch (b/d, p/q, E/3, 6/9). Do you think there’s a call for having illustrations of just basic letters like a and c and such?

We play games, but don’t actually have a designated night to do it – I love that idea!
Thanks!
Ooooh, great idea! Can’t wait to set a date for my family, thanks for the tip. Blessings, Whitney
