MEET KARA OF ELI’S LIDS

Eli’s Lids. She is the creator of some of the cutest children’s hats ever. She was also the recent sponsor of a giveaway. Please take a few moments to read about Kara, her wonderful family and how she got started creating her hats.

Penny Pinching Diva: Can you tell us a little bit more about you, your husband and your children.
Sure! My husband Brad and I were married on February 26th 2005 after just two months of dating, and a five month engagement! It was fast and wonderful! We were preggers by our one year anniversary and had our son Eli. Seven months later we became preggers with our second baby, Cora Jane. She will be one year-old on Valentines Day. Brad is an amazing husband and father, I feel truly blessed. Eli and Cora Jane (whom I affectionately refer to as the “kiddos”) are just awesome. I look at them and I’m in awe that I’m their mom… am I really 28?

Penny Pinching Diva: Where did the idea for Eli’s Lids come from?
I starting sewing awesome hats (aka Lids) for my son Eli after he was born to spice up all the lame boy clothes. I wanted Eli’s little style to reflect our casual surfer look. I also wanted the Lids to be practical… who wants to buy new clothes every 3 months? The smaller size Lid will fit size newborn to one year-old and the larger size will fit from 1 to 5 years-old. Once I had the pattern perfected I started making Lids for my friends kids’. Soon I was getting requests right and left and Eli’s Lids was born!!

Penny Pinching Diva: What has been your favorite thing about being a WAHM?
Not paying for a baby-sitter! Really, it is such a blessing to be home pouring into my children. The flexibility of working at home means I can be a mommy by day and a professional during nap time and evenings (Gotta use that BA I paid for!!).

Penny Pinching Diva: What is one of the hardest things that you have had to overcome when starting your own business?
Self-doubt. Starting your own business is a VERY slow moving process. I started making Lids for Eli when he was just a few weeks old and we are just starting to get into the swing of things two years later! I have wanted to give up a thousand times but I keep telling myself “I’ve made it this far” and I take another small step forward.

Penny Pinching Diva: Are you looking to expand your business anytime soon? Will you be adding new products to your inventory?
Yes and yes! We have been getting a lot of wholesale inquiries and we hope to be available in many boutiques by July. We will be adding some funky new Lid styles soon too! Awesome moms won’t have to look anywhere else when choosing a Lid to “top off” their little ones.

Penny Pinching Diva: In five years, where do you see your life and your business?
In my life I see two more kiddos (don’t tell my husband… he thinks we’re done… ha!), and I sure hope we own a house.Eli’s Lids will be the “it” gift for every baby shower and the place were hip mamas go to get Lids for their even hipper kiddos!

Penny Pinching Diva: On your blog, you said that your son Eli was your inspiration for Eli’s Lids. How is he inspiring you today?
Eli is ALL BOY! That’s probably why I couldn’t stand all the baby blue teddy bear boy clothing even when he was a newborn. Today I only create styles I would have him wear. Eli’s Lids reflects his spunky boyishness, his energy and his imagination without being dorky.

Thank you so much to Kara for doing this interview. If you are ever in need of some stylish hats for your children, then you should go to Eli’s Lids.
