SHOW NOTES 5-21-09 – WRITING A MEDIA KIT

WritingAMediaKit

Last nights show was really fun for me to do. As you can tell, I love all things blogging. I stumbled across all of the information that I know and I have no problems with sharing my “knowledge“. The topic of the show was How To Write A Media Kit. I think that it is very important for every blogger who wants to monetize their blog, do reviews or host giveaways to have a media kit. It helps alleviate some of the extra work that you have to do, and it makes you come across as professional to the companies that you are trying to work with.

There are 6 must have sections of a media kit:

  1. Introduction
  2. Demographics (Your audience.)
  3. Blog Statistics (Your numbers.)
  4. Advertising Options & Prices
  5. Payment Options
  6. Advertising Guidelines

In addition there are 3 miscellaneous sections you can include:

  1. Review Policies
  2. Giveaway Policies
  3. Affiliations or Press & Affiliations

Section 01: Introduction
In this section you should introduce yourself and your website. Tell a little bit about the person behind the website and the type of content that you include on your blog. Also in this section, give them a strong reason why a company should want to advertise on your website.

Section 02: Demographics
In this section you are going to want to write about your audience. Tell about the people who come and visit your website. The easiest way to find out this information is by hosting a poll or a survey on your website. I recommend PollDaddy.com for one of the best free services to use. Some of the basic information you want to find out is:

  • The average age range.
  • Household income.
  • How many children are in the household.
  • Educational background.
  • Employment status.
  • Relationship status.

Section 03: Statistics
This is one of the most important sections of your media kit. This breaks down all of your websites numbers. The main information you want to include in your statistics section are:

  • Monthly unique visitors.
  • Monthly page views.
  • Feed subscribers.
  • Email subscribers.
  • Twitter followers.
  • Newsletter subscribers.
  • Blog subscribers. (Google friend connect.)
  • Google pagerank.
  • Alexa Rank.
  • Technorati Rank.

A lot of this information can be gathered from installing a stat counter on your website. I highly recommend Statcounter.com.

Section 04: Advertising Options & Prices
In this section you are going to want to include the sizes of advertisements that your site can accommodate as well as the prices. Make sure you include the cost of each ad size. All ad sizes are measured in pixels. This part of your media kit should be organized in a neat format. The basic ad sizes are:

  • 300 x 250
  • 160 x 600 (skyscraper)
  • 120 x 600 (skyscraper)
  • 728 x 90 (These are usually positioned at the very bottom of a website. In the footer.)
  • 468 x 60 (These are usually positioned between articles or in the header.)
  • 125 x 125 (This ad size is usually purchased by other bloggers/website owners.)
  • Text links
  • Sponsored posts

TIP: Offer your advertisers a discount if they purchase 3, 6 or 12 months worth of advertising. It builds a relationship with longevity with the company you are working with.

Section 05: Payment Options
Outline how you will accept payment for advertising on your blog. I personally choose to only accept PayPal or Money Orders. If you choose to accept checks, make sure that you put a disclaimer in your media kit that you will not run their ads until the check has cleared the bank.

Section 06: Advertising Guidelines
Set the guidelines of the ads that you will, and will not, accept on your blog. Also state your refund policy in this section.

If you are running reviews or giveaways on your site, then include a section in your media kit outlining your policies. If you have been mentioned on any other websites or in the press, then include a Press & Affiliation section in your media kit. It just gives the companies you are working with the added assurance that you have influence.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments. I am also doing media kits for other websites/blogs for $20. If you need a media kit constructed for your website, then please contact me at msshadiggy {at} gmail.com and I will forward you the information that I need from you.

  1. Shynea you are awesome 🙂 Great information… you’re really providing a wonderful resource!!! Thanks a ton!

  2. A terrific show and very comprehensive media kit outline, Shynea – you’ve provided an excellent resource for all bloggers who are interested in monetizing their site.

Are you seeing a preference for certain ad sizes, or have you run across good pricing guidelines that show pricing of different sizes relative to each other (obviously the base price will vary from site to site)?

    Thanks again!

  4. Dear Wendy,

Here is an article by Mom’s Blogger Club with examples on how much some mommy bloggers charge for advertising. I think it is a pretty good outline of several different scenarios. I am seeing a preference for 300 x 250 ads and skyscraper ads. I am also getting more and more requests to do sponsored posts.

I am so glad that I was able to provide this information to other bloggers. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

    Take care,
    Shynea

  7. I have all of this information saved in various text files, and copy and paste it in emails. I have yet to sit down and put it all in one place, our media kit. I’m gonna spend some time on it today, I finally designed my twitter background this morning, lol.
