I’M A MOMMY BLOGGER. AND WHAT?
I know, catchy title. I wanted to draw your attention in so you could read my thoughts on mommy blogging.
I am a mommy blogger. I’m a mom who blogs, and sometimes I’m a blogger who is a mom. It just depends on what day, and what mood, you catch me in.
Lately there has been SO much controversy on the quote, unquote, “mommy blogger.” We have come under much scrutiny by those that have nothing better to do but criticize, critique and point fingers at us.
Yes, on Penny Pinching Diva you will see product reviews. And yes, ALL of my product reviews are my honest opinion on that product. Why do you only see positive reviews on my site you ask? Because:
- I only write about the products that my family really likes.
- I only write about the items that I will buy with my own money.
Yes, I have received some awful products. But do I write about them? No. My site has always been about positivity. I don’t believe in posting about anything negative about a company. I don’t sugar coat any of my reviews. If I write something that is glowing and full of praise, it’s because I am really in love with that product. I will NEVER write a nasty post about a bad product. I don’t see the point in bashing a company. Instead, I will send the company a private email and decline to write the review because of a, b and c.
I have received plenty of nasty comments and emails since I started blogging. For one thing or another, I get the very rare person who wants to come to my website and say something nasty to me. No matter how many good coupons and great deals that I post, there are always a few people that don’t like what I have to say and will try to “beat me down” with their words.
I have tough skin. So, nah nah to all of those negative naysayers who try to discourage me. I won’t let a few bad apples ruin it for the entire bunch.
Recently a fellow blogger that I read/interact with/stalk on a regular basis has come under abuse by a lot of people because she is proposing a PR Blackout. And so what? Isn’t that her prerogative to do with her blog as she may? People have no idea how many hours we have to work, and all of the things we have to do, just to work with these companies so that we can bring OUR readers all of the great giveaways that we run. There have been many times where I have given away prizes, worked for hours to coordinate it, and not receive anything in the end. And I did this happily for my readers.
When I first started Penny Pinching Diva, it was more of a personal blog with frugal articles posted here and there. As I started getting more readers, I changed the focus of my blog to fit my readers needs. Instead of writing about my family and posting pictures of my children, I started posting coupon deals so I could answer the call of so many other families who were in need of “penny pinching strategies.”
I still make personal post on here every once in awhile.
But do you know what kind of comments I started getting? “I don’t come here to read about your family.” “I don’t care to hear what you are going through.” “Could you please just stick to posting deals and make your personal post somewhere else?”
I started to comply. But then I thought, this is my blog! I spend 8+ hours a day on here. I write the content on here. I pay to host this site. I lost myself, and the focus of my blog, in the process.
I like where Penny Pinching Diva has gone. It has evolved so much over the year, but I feel as if it has evolved without me. I love PERSONAL blogs. I love knowing the “woman behind the blog.” That’s just me. I want to know the person who writes the blog that I visit on a daily basis. Even if it’s just a post here and there to say “Hey, I’ve been up to such-n-such…”
And that is what I am going to do. I am participating in the PR Blackout. For one week in August, I won’t post about any products or host any reviews or giveaways. Shock. Gasp. Dismay. Disappointment. I know. For one week, it will just be savings, frugal and personal posts. It will be me getting back in touch with my roots. It will be me taking back a piece of what has been missing on this blog for awhile now.
And I am excited about it.
I am excited to get the chance to know, meet and mingle with my readers. And I am excited to get the chance to let my readers know a little bit about me.
Thank you for all who visit this site. I will still keep the content flowing to help your families “pinch their pennies.” I will just put a little bit of me up in the mix.
Now vote for me, I’m #3 so I can post all of the silly moments of my life during that week. I know you want to see it.

Amen amen amen!! Great post!
Good for you! YOU do what YOU want/need to do on YOUR blog!!!! YOURS! Let’s hear it for Trisha!
Why do people feel the need to be mean on YOUR blog? Makes no sense, I tell ya! Keep doing you because your blog is fabulous!
Girrrrl… I wish somebody would LOL You don’t like what’s on my blog, you are more than welcomed to NOT read it! These people have lost their minds. What do they think, this is provided as a public service?? As long as GoDaddy is drafting YOUR bank account, be like Ray Charles and just let it do what it do baby! lol
As for the blackout, I don’t think a lot of people realize what goes into doing what you and Trisha and others like you do on a daily basis. It’s harder work than some of the JOBS of these people criticizing you! I also think a lot of people are acting real brand new and making a big deal out of this – making it mean something she never intended for it to mean.
It’s not about restricting bloggers. It’s about encouraging them – to get back to ENJOYING what they are doing rather than being burdened by the chore of it all. And, hey, if that doesn’t apply to *certain people* then all they have to do is opt to not participate in the blackout. Right? Right!

Amen Sister!
This was a great post! I am appalled that someone would send you Mean Comments. If they don’t have anything nice to say on your blog( and I dont see why they wouldnt) then just dont say anything at all. Please dont hold back on keeping it real, we need more of it.
Awesome post! I can’t believe people think they have the right to bash YOUR blog! It’s YOURS!! Crazy.
I just want to thank you for taking the time that you do for keeping up your website. I am so grateful to you and so many other “mom blogs” for keeping us, the readers, up to date on so many things! I pray you are continuously blessed above and beyond anything you could ever ask or think! Stay encouraged! And Stay strong in faith!
Great post. I think your blog is great and you should do what you want. If these idiots don’t like what you have to say, let them find another blog that is more to their liking. Some people are just clueless. Keep up the good work.
Shynea,
This is your blog and you should continue doing what you please with it! Readers have to option to come or go as they please. If they do not like your content they should go elsewhere. Those of us that enjoy your blog will continue to come back. You are doing great things. Keep up the good work!
Maria
Eff the haters! Keep doing what you’re doing. Your website has been a blessing to many. Thanks for all your helpful tips. Will be back next week.
I just wanted to add that I appreciate the personal touch. Continue following your vision. You don’t want to regret compromising and receiving nothing in return from people who don’t even know you or appreciate you. If someone prefers “facts only” they should go elsewhere. Thank you for all you do. It’s a blessing to fully enjoy what you do in life!
I love blogs with personal stuff mixed in and I do the same on my blog. No matter what you do in your life, there will always be haters, so I’d rather have them be faceless, nameless people on the internet than “real” people I see daily.
Do ya thing girl!
