LEARNING TO EAT WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS IS HARD – SASSY BABY HELPS

I have written countless times about my two year old son Tooty and his developmental delays, physical therapy and his pending diagnosis with autisim. I have struggled and prayed constantly about this. With his pending diagnosis comes a plethora of developmental delays that he should have already mastered by this age. One of those being the ability to feed himself. As I am now learning, it looks as if my baby boy Bammy will have to go to some type of speech therapy as he is following in Tooty’s footsteps and not yet forming any solid words yet.

As a mother, and being over stressed about this, I have decided to take this one step at a time and focus on one developmental milestone at a time. Since Tooty started attending school I thought that it was most important that he learned how to fee himself. Sassy Baby was kind enough to send us a box of their toddler feeding products to help aid both Tooty and Bam in this process.

The first thing I decided to try on were the “crumb catcher” bibs that they sent us. I’m not a fan of cloth bibs. I have never used them as the most they did for me were absorb liquid. It didn’t stop the food from staining their pants, (as it only protected their shirts). And as a mother, we all know that feeding a child, whether in the high chair, on the floor or at the table, food drops down. It’s the law of baby gravity. If it hits the bib, it slides down until it either falls on the floor, the seat of their chair or their pants.

What was different about the Sassy Baby’s “crumb snatcher” bib is that it not only collected the juice from their food, but the dribbles and the crumbs that actually fell from their mouth. Being two and one, my sons are both in this independant stage and the days of me attempting to hold their utensils for them is long over.

The second thing that I was thrilled to try out from Sassy Baby were their skid proof, stackable bowls. I cannot tell you how many times I have turned my back to my kids for just a few seconds only to hear the heart-stopping sound of a full bowl of food hitting the floor. (This act can set the tone for the rest of the morning. Believe me, I know.) Not on purpose, but due to them trying to figure out how to get the food in the bowl onto their forks or spoons. (I have been blessed with greedy children who don’t waste food. *smiles*) The combination of trying to slide the food on the spoon and having the bowl move makes for a mess.

Sassy Baby has created these really cute, durable and microwaveable safe bowls that have this awesome skid proof bottom that makes it just that much harder for a toddler learning how to eat on their own to slide this off of their eating surface.

The package of bowls come in four different sizes, so you have smaller sizes good for snacking and then a larger size good for meals. These two products alone from Sassy Baby helped my meal times out tremendously. Not to mention that while visiting my local Target, I saw some of their products in the baby aisle. I was too excited about that, because I was able to pick up a few more sets to use.

I received a few more really good products from Sassy Baby, so please check back on my blog on Wednesday as I describe the other products from them that helped me to teach my two youngest sons how to independantly feed themselves.

I received these products from Sassy Baby to review, in hopes that I would provide my readers with my honest opinion on their product. All thoughts and opinions are my own and I was in no way compensated monetarily for this review.

  1. Bam is tearing that strawberry up! I love the bibs with the pockets. They have saved me many a clothing change! Thank you for keeping us updated on the boys. I love to hear about their newest milestones.

  2. I usually log on your site from time to time to view deals. I have never responded until today. I felt a connection based on the fact that we both have children with developmental delays in addition to being pregnant too. I live in the metro Atlanta area and since there is little resources out there (from my experience), I would love to exchange ideas/experiences with you.

    • Dear Tina,

I would love to get in contact with you as well. I know that as mother’s with children that have developmental delays it is SO hard to find other mother’s out there that we can form a connection with. And the “normal” play groups that they have just don’t fit us. You can always contact me at msshadiggy {at} gmail.com. (I do apologize right now if it takes a day or two to get back to you.)

I was figuring that with you being in such a big city as Atlanta there should be more resources out there for you. I will definitely have to do some research and call some people and see what I can find out for you. What type of developmental delays do your children have?

I look forward to talking with you.

      Take care,
      Shynea

  3. I love Sassy products, not only are they helpful with function but they are so brightly colored and cute!
Yay for the skid-proof bowls! I don’t miss the flying plates and bowls!

    • Dear Priscilla,

I am really glad that I found this company. I know that it may be a little too late to start using bibs on my boys but these are going to come in handy when we have to go to restaurants and I don’t want their good clothes messed up. lol

      Take care,
      Shynea

  4. Oh my gosh. I was on your website and my daughter saw a picture of Bam scroll across the screen. She sat here and threw a tantrum until she could see more pictures of him. I think she’s in love ;)

    • Dear K.O.,

Uh oh! Are we going to have to schedule a play date? lol You are going to have to email me your mailing address. I would love to send cards/letters/pictures to each other occassionally. (Because I know as mother’s we hardly have time to breath let alone write.) Your daughter is too cutie. I know Bam would be smitten. ;)

      Take care,
      Shynea

      • Yes, we’ll have to keep in touch through the mail. We’ll be modern day pen pals! I’ll send it to you now…
