For a family of my size a large amount of our money “could” go to buying groceries, but I don’t let it. I plan out my grocery shopping in steps. By doing this, it allows me to maximize on my savings, plan out my meals, and deters me from spending excess money on items that I wouldn’t otherwise purchase. (I call this impromptu purchases.)

I like to do my grocery shopping in stages:

  1. Menu Planning
  2. Creating a Grocery Shopping List
  3. Organizing My Coupons
  4. The Actual Grocery Shopping Trip

I have already written a very good post going into detail on the benefits of menu planning. Menu planning has been so beneficial to my grocery budget. You would not believe how much money I shaved off of our grocery bill just by doing something as simple as creating a menu plan and then forcing myself to stick to it. By doing that alone I saved over $50 a week. (I even created a simple menu planning form that you can download and use.)

Once you have created a menu plan, you’ll need to create a grocery shopping list. I could go on and on about this in words, but I’m guessing a video would be better. Last year I participated in a study on how women efficiently went grocery shopping. I forgot that I uploaded the videos to my YouTube channel. So I am going to incorporate those old videos into this new series.

When you’re finished watching the video let me know how you plan out your grocery shopping list.

  1. Hey really like the video. I already write down everything I need when I go to the store. I also have a pad on my refrigerator for when I run out of things. I noticed that you put a (c) beside the item you have a coupon for gooood idea. I will definetly start doing that, but I need to organize my coupons better.

    • Amanda,

Don’t worry. When I see you during Thanksgiving I will have a coupon binder ready for you. 🙂 Promise.

      Take care,

  2. Awesome video!! I really need to start doing my menu planning. Now that I am home everyday, I have the time to sit down and figure out the meals all week and take my kitchen inventory.

Also, I love your handwriting….I don’t know if I’ve mentioned that before or not. LOVE IT…it is so neat and pretty!

  3. Hi! Thanks for these great food-related money saving tips! I’m going to share a link to this post with my fans!

Also, I plan my grocery list after menu planning for a few days worth of meals. I also have basic items that I always keep in stock.
