STEPHANIE IS A BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR

Stephanie - 01I do not define myself as a breast cancer survivor – this is my journey – my story. It is not a sad tale – it is a joyous occasion. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2005.

I am sharing this story to help others as they face this challenging time and hopefully, encourage them to help other people in all walks of life have the strength to meet their own challenges head on.

In 2006, more than 200,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer – and over 44,000 lost their battle. Statistically speaking – 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer – if not you, then it will be someone you know.

My breast cancer was diagnosed early – during an annual mammorgram. I was fortunate to have begun my screenings at the recommended age of 40 and it was discovered – less than 2 cm at the largest side. Surgery was successful, my lymph nodes were clear, recovery was a breeze with breast conserving surgery.

A week after my annual exam, I received a call from my son’s pediatrician as my physician was on vacation and I could hear it in his voice as he said “You have breast cancer. I was sitting in my living room, surrounded by boxes as I was moving into my new home in Portland Oregon from the Bay area and had 11 days before my move. They wanted to set up the surgery right away. So, I moved to Oregon, flew home and my DD took me to surgery on 1 Sept 2005 and then to dinner later that afternoon as I was so hungry. He was a champ and got us a nice hotel that we had stayed at before with a in-room hot tub bathtub for a few nights before returning back to Oregon (1,000 miles away).

It was a good thing to have work, and the new house to keep me busy. Moving into a new house, one that was built in the 40’s comes with a lot of work. Over the coming months, I spent a great deal of time painting, staining, and working on the yard. It was a labor of love…. and one that my Oncology doctor at OHSU in Portland worried about.

Stephanie - 04I started my Chemo in late September 2005 and as they will warn you, your hair starts to fall out after the second treatment. As you can see from my photos, I had my hair cut off. We made it a family affair as my son went with me to the salon to cut my hair and photograph me while it was happening. He compared my shaved head to a “hedgehog” foot scraper, but the donation I was able to make to “Locks of Love” was worth losing my hair to – something that my brother has done twice – just for the love of it, as he puts it “for the cancer kids.”

Stephanie - 05After my second treatment I was outside and happened to start scratching my head, well, my hand came back with hair, lots of it. I thought I would have a few days but that proved to be a misconception. The next morning I woke up and took a shower that lasted over 1.5 hours. I tried to wash all the stubble away and thinking I could shave later. Well, I finally gave up and got the disposable shavers out – 9 shavers later, I was bald. Smooth and bald.

I decided not to use the prescription for a wig and go “au natural” – if men can walk around bald, so could I.

I was asked on the way to a business meeting in Seattle, was I making a fashion statement? I laughed and said, if only I could draw my eyebrows on evenly. That is what I missed most, my eyelashes and eyebrows – but that was just another temporary thing to deal with…. I did not need to be that vain, right? It was great to be in Portland during this time as there are bumper stickers that say “Keep Portland Weird” and I did not stick out. Of course, I learned early on, if you act like you are trying to hide something, then that is the first place people will look.

The nurses at OHSU (where Lance Armstrong was cured of cancer) were awesome. They were a lot of fun – considering the somber mood of some of the patients. They were impressed that I embraced my journey head on and went bald. It made me sad to see the women being treated still holding on to the little hair they had left and covering it up with scarves or hats. My hair style (and covering the gray) was important to me so, I know how a woman feels about her hair, the treatment and prognosis was more important to me. Initially, my belief was that by eliminating the added stress and sadness of looking at the mirror every day and seeing the few remaining hairs on my head trying to keep my dignity by covering it up, it was uplifting to not worry one bit about the hair loss- I did not even have to shave my legs (for a while) and that was awesome! No hair, anywhere can be liberating. I say, let’s get liberated!!!

My last chemo treatment was in January 2006. I was given a total of 8 rounds of chemo (4 rounds of two different cocktails) due to my age (pre-menopause) and let me say when they tell you to get Senokot-S® – get it! Stay on it and keep things moving otherwise you will be miserable and the headaches that come with holding that chemo filled waste in your system are horrible. The quickest cure to getting through this is reading, renting movies, having time to be by yourself and veg out. I did. It was easier for me to disappear for a few days and do nothing but watch the SCI-FI channel than to deal with people in my house.

That’s how I got through it. I did have several girlfriends checking up on me, one called me every morning, she was awesome. Michelle was my greatest friend during this time. She did not let me feel sorry for myself and we talked about everything during this time. I also got closer to my Aunt whom I grew up with and as a kid, thought she was the coolest! She got me to do her homework and I did it so I could “hang out with her” as she was 3 years older than me. We gained a closeness that we always had deep down, but now Jan is my closest friend and not an “aunt” but a sister!

Following Chemo comes the radiation. Fun stuff. Actually, I did not feel poorly during this time. I had 33 treatments straight with weekends off.

My Radiation team at OHSU was awesome. I love Dr. Marquez, she was very upbeat with an awesome bedside manner, the staff were also awesome. The treatments were quick and after a few weeks the burned tissue started peeling. Think of a sunburn that blisters and takes weeks to get rid of but you keep burning it every day. I was healed by Mid April 2006 and for me – I added Neosporin to the healing process – it worked great and my skin was not worse for the wear. Oh, no hair grew back under my arm, so only one underarm needs to be shaved – see, something positive from all that radiation.

During the time I was going through my treatment, Cheryl Crow announced she had BC. She did not have to go through Chemo and Radiation – but not everyone does. Each person’s treatment is different. I forgave her for not having to suffer – truly suffer with chemo as I did because awareness and early treatment will save more women!

Stephanie - 02New hair growth was the exciting thing – through radiation, I started sprouting hair on my head and wow was it different – curly. Did I say CURLY? Well, that is one of the fun side-effects of Chemo, your hair changes. 15 months later and my curly hair is still curly and when it get’s wet, well, it gets curlier! Now in June 2009, it is different again – the curl is gone and is a bit thinner in shaft size but that tells me the chemo is fully gone from my body…

How you embrace this experience can be life changing. For me, it was a walk in the park. I have had many challenges in my life, lost my mother to lung cancer right after my 18th birthday. She was 45, like Dana Reeves, she did not smoke. It was a shock that changed my family. I went on to college and then my first marriage to a man who I would divorce 3 years later after physical and mental abuse. But life goes on and if we rise up every time we fall, we will be higher a bit, each time. Then at 33 lost my father to cancer – skin cancer. Frightening.

Then my best friend, Kitty, was losing her battle to breast cancer and was leaving behind a 10 yr old daughter and as devastating as that was, we sent her off to heaven after raising $50,000 for a fund for her daughter and a glorious party for her family and friends at the Children’s Museum in San Jose Ca. It was a short 8 months later that I would find out I too had breast cancer…

Live, Laugh and Love every day.

- Let me know if you have any other questions as this is just a start to help you with going through what I went through -and really there were tough days that I was in so much pain nothing helped – but that was just a blink in the total time I was in treatment and not an every day event… it is what you make of it and you can make it worse than it needs to be… or you can embrace it and push through it….

Best,
Stephanie

FOR THE LOVE OF ORGANIZATION

Kat - EditorA couple of weeks ago, I graced the ePages of PennyPinchingDiva.com with a few tips on a major player in the game of pinching pennies: planning!

This week, we’re hitting on the next step… organization. YES, I’m going there. {You know all those little stacks and piles just aren’t going to work too much longer.} Eventually you’re going to have to do something with them. When that time comes, you’ll be thankful for this blog I promise.

Before I get into the organization tips I want to first address the following comment from a visitor of my previous post:

Curlie said: “Any meal tips for planning for the week. For me this is the hardest thing to do, yet many people do and I don’t understand how. Any advice??”

Curlie, when I plan for the week, I try to concentrate not only on FOOD, but on my daily schedule. I consider what days will be my most hectic and those are the days I plan things like chili cheese dogs, regular hot dogs, sandwiches, hamburger helper, or one of my meals in minutes recipes. One other important detail is whether or not I plan to work later than usual – if I have a website, article, or other deadline coming up I can count on staying up which means I will also be sleeping in {hehe} If I do, those will be the days I plan to have cereal for breakfast because the kids can do that themselves. Once I pencil in those meals, I fill in the rest of the meals with those things in mind. I make sure I don’t plan two heavy meals in the same day. If my schedule tells me we won’t be having a big lunch then I will plan on making a big dinner. The key is to keep mixing things up – try not to make the same things week after week. Use sites like Kraft or Tyson’s Embrace Dinner to get some fresh ideas to keep your family’s taste buds from dying of boredom!

The first thing you will need to take into consideration is RELEVANCE.

Do you NEED – or WILL you need – everything you are housing in all your piles around the house or all over your desk? Or are you simply a pack rat and don’t want to throw anything away “just in case” you may end up using it “eventually?” (Be honest!) If it isn’t relevant, GET RID OF IT!

Secondly, you need to look at SPACE.

Does everything that IS relevant, (and made the cut to be deemed keep-able) have its own place? If not, STOP right now and find a spot for everything because obviously you can’t put anything in its place if it doesn’t have a place. Keep reminding yourself that you need a place for everything and you need everything in its place!

Your final consideration needs to be given to PROCESSING.

Are you systematic about dealing with everything you’re bringing in your home or office? Without an understanding of how you plan to function with new material being brought in, your existing system of organization will FAIL.

  • LABEL your files: keep separate COLORED expanding folders categorizing your medical, financial, and miscellaneous records. Within those expanding folders, create sub-folders labeling the different types of files stored there (such as personal, spousal, or dependent medical records; tax (income), debt (notes), or recurring (bills) financial records; and keepsakes, lease, and other miscellaneous records) This makes it much easier to file away new paperwork rather than resorting to the “stacking” method!
  • SEPARATE food, clothes, and other stored materials: The three places many people seem to lose all sense of organization are the refrigerator/cupboards, drawers, and storage areas. Things tend to get thrown in and forgotten! In each of these areas, you should separate items based on their function and/or characteristics. This makes it much easier to “inventory” the items you have, locate them later, and increases the likelihood that you will actually use the items you have in your possession. Conversely, it will also increase the chances of recognizing items that have become irrelevant so that you are able to get rid of them.

SPRING CLEANING: At least once per year, go through your home and filter out old items to make room for the new. Take old belongings that are still usable to places like Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

MOMPRENEUR MONDAY: LISETH OF CHIC MOMMY USA

Mompreneur Monday

I have to admit that I was very excited when I got the chance to interview Liseth of Chic Mommy USA. Not only doesn’t she have one of the best accents, she also is the owner of a cute Etsy boutique that sells some of the cutest hand sewn laptop bags and baby slings that I have ever seen. I started my journey in baby wearing not too long ago, and I have been in love with it ever since.

MotM - Chic Mommy

I cornered Liseth and got the chance to ask her a few questions about her life and her business as a mompreneur.

PPD.com: Thank you for allowing me the chance to interview you. When I first saw your Etsy store I was blown away at how beautiful your creations were. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Liseth: I always laugh at myself because I am the truest example of the infamous “Jack of all Trades”. I studied law in Costa Rica but never felt like practicing, instead I decided to work for many years in the Alternative Health Industry, which I learned to love! Now, I am a mother of 3 children under the age of 5. Being a mom, and trying to find some time for myself was a little hard at the beginning of my journey. Soon enough through little projects that I decided to make for my children, I picked up on my long forgotten crafting abilities and the “monster” came to live. Sewing, crocheting, fabric painting… you name it! I collect fabrics and notions… you never know when you get into “the project” and then I will have what I need.

PPD.com: Where did the idea of Chic Mommy USA come about?

Liseth: I used to have a Maternity Store in Costa Rica, and we had introduced handmade items that I would purchase through local crafters. Once my store closed, due to the crazy financial economies that we live in, I started to sew more often as a therapeutic way of not loosing my mind! Soon enough, the things starting to pile up at home, the projects kept on appearing, patterns were stacking up and that is when I decided to open my Etsy Shop. I need to put out there what I have been creating for months with so much love. My kids are usually my inspiration, and lately I have been paying a little more attention to current technology and fashion trends.

PPD.com: From looking at your products, I am amazed at how detailed they are. How long have you been sewing? What was the first thing that you ever sewed?

Liseth: You are going to laugh. It has only been three years since I started sewing. I am a crazy self learner, and I have learned to sew with online tutorials. My first sewing project was a Baby Sling for my Dear Daughter No. 2. Since then I have not stopped offering them to every mom I see struggling with babies on bare arms.

PPD.com: One of the items that caught my eye were your baby slings. Why did you begin sewing these?

Liseth: A good holistic mom, friend of mine, gave me my first Ring Sling. When I went to visit my family in Costa Rica, it came to his finals days. Wear and tear can take a toll on this useful product. So, I almost went nuts, but my dear mother, a crafter herself, pulled it apart, and recreated the pattern. We made our first sling and from this point on many many fun baby sling sales.

PPD.com: I know that a lot of moms say that when they first started their own business, they had to choose whether to do it full time or part time. What was your approach when you first started Chic Mommy USA?

Liseth: Well, it started as a hobby to stay sane, then it developed into a part time job, and now, it takes a lot of my time. I am always on the internet looking for new products, new patterns and new ways to satisfy an unmet need.

MotM - Chic Mommy 02PPD.com: You have three beautiful children. They are absolutely gorgeous. How have they inspired you in your life and in your business?

Liseth: Thanks so much for the comments about my kiddos! My daughter is a Princess by genetic make up. She’s been wanting to wear tutus, princess dresses, tiaras, crowns and ballerina sleepers since she knew that the color pink existed. My son gets a little jealous because I don’t make enough boy outfits for him so he asks for all kinds of gadgets and toys. They have even learned to enjoy my long dreading trips to the fabric store, and lately they have been even helping me choose different fabrics for our projects. They are my light and the energy behind all I do, including Chic Mommy.

PPD.com: What is one thing that you have done to successfully market your business?

Liseth: Joining Twitter! I am usually at home with the kids or limited to a small group of friends and family. Marketing a business in such a small manner was not working. Once I joined twitter, I have met an amazing group of people. We all share similar ideals, fun businesses and I have found an incredible support system for my personal and business life.

PPD.com: What does a typical day in your life look like?

Liseth: Well, first thing is thanking God for “Another Beautiful Day”. Turn my computer on, make some coffee, and feed my kids all of the fun healthy foods we have carefully chosen for the week. While they eat and I sip my coffee, I check on my previous day’s statistics, orders, and start by saying hi to all my twitter friends. From then on, everything flows in a very interesting way. I just deal with things as they come. Kids, work, family, errands, they all mix into a very fun and live filled experience.

PPD.com: What new products can we expect to come to Chic Mommy USA this fall?

Liseth: I want to work on some warmer baby sling options as well as baby blankets. I will also continue to market my laptop sleeves and my newest addition, covers for the Amazon “Kindle”. I will probably pick on my crochet projects. I really enjoy making fun hats for the cooler days as well as little soft toys.

I just wanted to say thank you once again to Liseth of Chic Mommy USA for allowing me to interview her. She was such a joy to talk to.

MAMI MARKETING ON A BUDGET: NETWORKING

Jennifer - EditorI had initially wanted to discuss networking for small business purposes, to gain readership on a blog, or perhaps just trying to get a product/service out to the public. However, lately things have dramatically changed in my life.  By the end of this month I will be officially unemployed and joining many others affected by this economy.

But don’t worry about me ladies and don’t count me out just yet either.  I am a Latina and a New Yorker at heart so – excuse my slang – but I ain’t goin’ out like that! As a matter of fact I think this is the perfect opportunity for me to take my “side hustle” and turn it into a “full-time hustle”.

And, because of my current circumstances, I began to rethink the content I wanted to share with all of you through this blog. Therefore, as you are reading this, keep in mind that many of the things I will be discussing in the coming weeks can definitely be applied when searching for a new job as well. And it is my hope that whatever you’re ultimate goals and aspirations are that you are able to walk away from this information that much more prepared, knowledgeable and ready to take on the world.

With that said let’s talk Networking!

I’m sure that many in the public relations or marketing field would agree with me when I say that one of the key components to effective marketing is networking. And as I’ve come to find out firsthand, thanks to the Georgia Department of Labor, this is also true when seeking employment.

So, what comes to mind when you think of networking?  Does an image of someone in a business suit, at a networking mixer, and handing out business cards pop in your head?  I think that’s what most of us believe is typical…the traditional in-person or face-to-face networking.  And that is a great way to effectively network.  However, an alternative to that would be online or social networking.  Whichever you choose to pursue, the following are helpful tips to guide you down your networking path.

  • Create a wish list of people or companies that you would like to reach out to – then with a little researching help – and the Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon game – figure out who you know that can get you to those key people.  As the old adage goes it’s not what you know but who you know. And taking it one step further sometimes it’s not just who you know but who they know!

  • Make sure that you’ve created a database for the information on the contacts/relationships you are cultivating.  This can easily be tracked through Microsoft Outlook or Excel spreadsheet – or similar programs.  You can also try using a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system. For a free, single user account check out FreeCRM.

  • Try connecting in-person through professional organizations like PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) – or your local Chamber of Commerce.

  • Network through free seminars, workshops, and webinars through websites such as Eventbrite or PR Newswire.  Also check out your local colleges, libraries, and Department of Labor.
  • Leverage the power of social networking through sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and MySpace, to name a few.  Many of these sites allow you to join groups of like-minded people and provide a great forum to connect.  They also have job boards.

  • Become a volunteer – not only are you able to make more connections but this allows you to give back to the community – making this a win-win for all.  One of my favorite websites for volunteer work is Volunteer Match. Not only can you find volunteer work in your area but they also have virtual and skill-specific opportunities.  Another one to check out is Taproot Foundation. It’s currently its only available in New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Seattle, Washington DC, and Los Angeles.

  • If you build it they will come! Create your own social network.  One of the more popular sites to do this is Ning.

  • But why recreate the wheel when you can join us here at the new Penny Pinching Diva Forum and network to your heart’s content!

And remember that anytime you’re anywhere consider it another perfect opportunity for you to network.  Take full advantage of it and be prepared with your business cards and bright cheerful smile.  The next person you meet could potentially be the gatekeeper to your ultimate goals.

Wishing you all the best in mamihood,

KEEPING – AND SAVING – UP

Kat - EditorAs a mother of a TON of children (there are – say it with me – F.I.V.E. of them) sometimes I find it extremely difficult to keep up with, well, anything. Disorganization in a large family is a cardinal SIN… and it’s the key to wasting an unconscionable amount of valuable time. I have been a working mom, a stay at home mom, and am now a work-at-home mom, enjoying the best of both worlds – making an income while being at home with my family. While I don’t believe I have ever been so busy in my entire life until I started working at home, my life was almost equally chaotic during my experiences working outside the home and when I was at home without focusing on a career. Where I am going with all of this is to say that EVERY mother – regardless of her profession or lack thereof – is a busy woman, and we often feel as though no matter how hard we try, we never do enough to be “finished” – it’s okay, ladies … you can go ahead and say, “AMEN!” :)

No matter what category you fit into, there are a few simple strategies that will get you off to a fresh *productive* start each day and lead you into feeling accomplished rather than looking around thinking, “I know I’ve been busy all day… I just can’t think of one thing I’ve actually gotten DONE!” (Don’t act like I’m the only one. Come on back down here for your REALITY CHECK – haha) So, for the moms who aren’t in denial about their lack of organization and structure, read on for a few helpful tips to get you back on track to keeping up with, well, everything! The best part, it all ties into ONE simple concept – PLANNING!

I cannot emphasize enough as to how important it is that you PLAN! True enough, spontaneity is fun from time to time but seriously when you have a whole family to keep up with, you just can’t be unpredictable all the time. There has to be some structure somewhere. Not only can planning save you TIME, but it can also save you a significant amount of MONEY! How? Hmm…

  • If you get accustomed to planning for your purchases, you can find better deals by making price comparisons, learning sales dates, and using price matching to get the best prices available and perhaps even compound your savings with store and/or manufacturer’s coupons or rebates. Your purchase planning allows you to do what your mom would have advised – to SHOP AROUND – and search for valuable coupons in sales papers, newspapers, or online. (I recently saved 25% off of a skirt I had to buy as a part of our summer choir uniforms at church by using a coupons.com internet clipping at Stage!)
  • If you get accustomed to planning your meals, you can better consume the food you already have on hand, which reduces the chances of your money being wasted by food spoiling or expiring. Sit down at the end of each week and make a plan for each meal you will prepare for the following week. From your menu plan, make a grocery list that covers all the ingredients you will need. Check your cupboards/refrigerator and mark off what you already have available. This way, you know exactly what you need to purchase at the store. Then, check to see if you have coupons for the items you plan to buy. (You’re on the PERFECT website to stay on top of all the latest and greatest sales as well as some brushing up on your Couponing 101, courtesty of Shynea – the couponing QUEEN!)
    • STICK TO YOUR LIST! The whole purpose of planning is to restrict your impulse buying, remember? This will save you a significant amount of money each year, and most of all – you won’t be buying things you aren’t intending to consume relatively quickly. (Your wallet will thank you.)
  • If you get accustomed to planning your day and prioritizing your tasks, you won’t miss bill deadlines which cause you to incur late fees or more importantly work-related deadlines which may or may not cost you money but will cost you major cool points with your clients and/or your boss. And, be honest, how many of us have gotten wrapped up in something and forgotten about parent-child lunch day or other school events? (What an “ouch” face we get from the kids at the end of the day, huh?) Those kind of things can be avoided with a little PLANNING! If you are used to looking at your schedule, then you are less likely to lose track of important things like meetings, calls you need to make, etc.
    • TIP: A great web-based task manager is Remember the Milk. It has a FireFox extension that integrates with Gmail as well as a Gmail gadget for those who use Google Labs. You can also add the RTM widget to your iGoogle page or just manage it from the RTM user interface. You can add the RTM app to your iPhone or simply manage your task list from your web-enabled cell or smart phone’s internet browser. Have several separate task lists you need to maintain? No problem. You can create multiple lists and there are even features that allow you to track locations, postpone uncompleted tasks, or delegate tasks to other RTM users. Plus, if all that doesn’t impress you, the feeling of self-awesomeness you get when you click “complete” is SO sweeeeeeet!

Have you ever taken your family on a vacation? Think about this… You can save at least $25 per week by simple planning and put it into savings… if you start right now, by next summer you would have $1300 available (plus any interest earned). What could YOU do with $1300? Hmmmm….

Next week, check back for tips on how to capitalize on your newfound planning skills by ORGANIZING your life!

YOUR BABY’S EYES ARE AN IMPORTANT ASSET

Vision problems run in my family. Out of my parents, three sister and I, I am the only one who doesn’t have to wear glasses. These statistics don’t show much favor to me when I become a little older, because more then likely I will have to wear glasses later on in my lifetime.

That is why I find it to be very important for my sons to get their vision checked on a regular basis. Look at these eyes:

Tooty Eyes

They are absolutely gorgeous, but I know that there is a chance that if I leave it up to his pediatrician to remember to screen him then there is a chance that he won’t be assessed on a regular basis. Doctors, they are good, but my paranoia of knowing that five out of six people in my family wears glasses won’t allow me to become lack luster in the vision screening department.

When I found out that there was a new procedure that was non-invasive and used a child-friendly medical device to check my son’s vision, of course I had to do more research on it. It is called the Enfant Vision and it allows a pediatrician to test your child’s vision without having to dilate their eyes. (I know it is a struggle, even with my oldest two sons, to get those drops in their eyes.)

I didn’t know that vision disorders were the fourth most common disability among children. I can see how that could be an unknown fact to me, or any parent for that matter, since according to the American Academy of Pediatrics only 21% of all preschool aged children have their vision screened.

What I like about the Enfant Testing System is that they use animated characters and graphics, along with music, to test a child’s vision. Because doctor visits are already stressful, this is perfect for my 23 month old son who gets a bit apprehensive around strange machinery.

If you think your child may need to have his vision tested, take this really quick online quiz. It will ask you a few key questions to see if a vision screening is needed for your child. Go ahead and take a few minutes to complete the quiz. It could mean the difference between an early intervention for your child, or an “It’s too late to do anything about it” feeling of regret.

I’M GETTING READY FOR GARAGE SALE SEASON

With the summer months upon me, I am preparing myself for my early Saturday morning yard sale adventures. Last year my fiance bought our then baby boy a really nice baby crib for a fraction of the cost of a brand new one. Since my family lives on a very strict budget, shopping at yard sales for our bigger purchases helps us to cut our costs really low.

Garage sales are becoming an integral part in a lot of families shopping practices as we are cutting back on spending. Looking for bargains is becoming a necessity in order for most families to stretch their dollars as far as they will go. Garage sales are a major benefit to frugal families because they are the ultimate bargain hunting experience.

I have recently found a new website that may make my foray in yard sales this summer a lot easier. Garage Sales Tracker is a free source that makes it easier for users to find, and list, a garage sale at one central website. If you are hosting a garage sale this summer Garage Sales Tracker is a great way to advertise your garage sale for free.

This garage sale website has a lot of great features for you to utilize in finding a yard sale in your area:

  • It has driving directions embedded on the sale page to make it easier for you to find out exactly where the garage sale is located.

  • If you find more then one garage sale that you would like to attend, routing from sale to sale can be done.
  • They are in the process of developing an iPhone application that will allow their visitors to see all local garage sales within their radius.
  • A directory for all flea markets and consignment shops is being put together to make this website a one stop bargain shop.
I have been visiting this website for the better part of the week and I have already found two garage sales in my area that I plan on attending. If you are like me, and like to go yard saling please be on the look out for a short series in the coming weeks on how you can be a savvy garage sale shopper.

FREE DIABETES MEAL PLANNER

I am going to keep promoting this diabetes meal planner. I suffered from gestational diabetes with my third pregnancy, and my fiance’s mother and grandmother both suffer from diabetes. I know I also have a few readers who suffer from diabetes as well. Experiencing it first hand, I know how important it is to monitor what you eat very carefully. I also know that what you eat can affect you throughout the entire day. I would have days where I felt really tired, just not like myself, because that day I didn’t eat like I should have. If you know anyone who suffers from diabetes and they need an affective way to monitor and plan their meals, then please sign up for this meal planner and give it to them. It’s free and as you know free is my middle name.
